Camp Education Staff – Duties and Expectations Camp Education, along with the Infant and Junior School and Community School for secondary education, follow the UK National Curriculum. All teachers are subject to yearly Performance Planning and Review as laid out in the Falklands Islands Development Plan. Travelling teachers will usually have a ‘beat’ of three locations. The number of children taught at a location is usually between 1 and 3 pupils. A teacher will stay at each location for two weeks, or one week for Reception children. It is essential that teaching staff remain flexible and fit in with the day to day requirements of the farm. The ‘beat’ is divided so that teachers have a combination of families on East and West Falkland. This means that approximately every 4-6 weeks teachers will travel through Stanley for a weekend. The Camp Education office in Stanley is responsible for seeing that arrangements are made for getting teachers to and from their beat. This means, that as beats are usually for a period of a fortnight, it is expected that in the middle weekend travelling teachers will remain on their beat with the family, unless, for example, the family is coming into Stanley for the weekend and the travelling teacher might come in and return with them. This applies more to teachers with a beat on East Falkland where some families do come into town regularly. Travelling teachers do have to live in close contact with their families. In the past, we have found that teachers who can involve themselves in the life of the farm tend to gain most enjoyment and satisfaction from their visits. It is essential to find a balance between time for you and time for families to be together. Teaching takes place in the home or in a separate building for a minimum of 4½ hours a day. When the travelling teacher is not visiting the children have telephone lessons with either a settlement teacher or through the Camp Education office in Stanley. Liaison between travelling teachers and telephone teachers is essential for continuity and progress. Travelling teachers should receive a report from the telephone teacher prior to the visit and should provide a report to the telephone teacher at the end of the visit. A written record book is kept for each child and is an official government document. Each travelling teacher is supplied with a Laptop computer and printer to use with students. At the present time the Education Department pays the monthly rental for connection to the local service provider for e-mail and Internet access. While the department recognizes the relative isolation of travelling teachers and the need to use e-mail and Internet for personal use it must be stressed that the travelling teacher is responsible for the connection fee and on line use each time the service is used for private use. This must be negotiated with the family prior to use. The charge is 6p per minute. When the Internet is used for school use the travelling teacher pays the family and is reimbursed for the cost. There is a procedure for this, which must be followed.
