Farmers’ Week

Farmers Week is usually held during the first week in July which is the middle of winter. This is when farmers get together with the Agricultural staff for meetings and seminars on a variety of farming issues. As the whole family generally comes into Stanley, Camp Education runs a Winter School concurrently.

This year  Camp Education held yet another very successful Winter School during Farmers’ Week.

The theme for the week was Flight and the children had sessions making kites, helicopters and parachutes. They also visited FIGAS where they were given a tour of the Hangars and Air Traffic Control. The visit was completed with a fly pass by a tornado.

A planned trip to MPA was cancelled due to the bad weather so an alternative study of Falkland Island birds was done.

The children also had daily a swimming session. Throughout the week they gained confidence in the water and without exception made a marked improvement.

Thank you to the Leisure Centre Staff who helped with the swimming sessions.

A presentation of the week’s work was held at the Stanley Hostel on the Thursday afternoon, where the children showed parents and staff work covered and also sang songs learned.

Certificates were then presented to the children by Camp Education Supervisor, Richard Fogerty.

The way in which the children responded to working together as a group and their achievements, makes the Winter School all worthwhile.
